LED Product Update - Summer 2008

Techsil LED Product Update

Techsil are industrial suppliers of coatings, adhesives and encapsulants. We offer a wide variety of versatile materials to solve a range of design and production issues. In this update we are highlighting a number of products for use in LED assembly and LED packaging processes. We have also included some success stories from our customers and a case study from iVision.

If you would like to discuss how any of these products may help you with a specific application or to request a free sample please email technical@techsil.co.uk alternatively phone your local technical sales representative.

Encapsulation
Techsil introduce InvisiSil LED silicone encapsulants from Momentive Performance Materials (formerly GE Bayer Silicones) which deliver a range of refractive indices (1.41 - 1.53) and high optical efficiencies (light transmittance >95%, 400-800nm). They also provide long term resistance against yellowing and delamination - typical of epoxy-based materials. The InvisiSil portfolio includes IVS4632 which offers high hardness and excellent light transmittance over a wide range of wavelengths and IVS4012 which is a gel material preventing stressing of LED chips. Click here for link to

Glob top materialsGlob Top
New glob top silicone encapsulants from MPM provide consistent dispensing performance and material flow to form the dome shape for COB (chip on board) encapsulation. Component designers with chip-mounting and wire-bonding capabilities can benefit from the process simplicity that these materials offer in LED COB packaging applications. Technical Data

MPM lens materialsLens materials
Recently launched by Momentive is a new series of lens fabrication materials that are excellent candidates for liquid injection moulding processes. The IVSM450 delivers high transparency, mechanical strength and can be moulded using a variety of techniques.

Thermal Management
Thermally conductive silicones help dissipate the heat generated by high brightness LEDs. Techsil supply greases, adhesives and potting materials for thermal management. Our RTV1084G for example, is a non-corrosive, 1-part, (RTV) silicone rubber. It exhibits excellent primerless adhesion to many substrates. The product is cured rapidly in contact with atmospheric moisture to a tough rubber. It has thermal conductivity of 2.3W/m°K it is fast skinning and has low linear shrinkage. Please contact technical@techsil.co.uk for more information on our range of thermally conductive materials.

LED Assembly Products

Individual LEDs require further protection from the environment for the final packaged lighting device such as encapsulation, potting, coating and sealing.

MPM potting materialsTransparent potting - These low viscosity silicone rubbers and gels provide enhanced moisture and vibration protection. A smart alternative to conventional materials. RTV12 for example, is a self bonding silicone encapsulant therefore no primer is required to adhere and it has a room temperature cure which can be particularly helpful in the production of large screen displays. Many of our customers prefer the diffused light effect that is created with this product. For crystal clear rubber use RTV615. Link to technical data

Water Clear Polyurethanes -
The WC series that we supply from BJB Enterprises is a group of flexible and rigid casting resins that have been designed for use in applications requiring tough, tintable and pigmentable materials. They are UV stable and so will maintain clarity in outdoor applications.  With an array of hardnesses and working times, these materials are excellent for fabricating parts of all kinds. Link to technical data.

DFX deck lightsTechsil's VT3000 is a fast curing (1:1) polyurethane which cures hard to ensure complete mechanical protection for your LEDs. This product is being used by DFX Ltd, designers and manufacturers of LED lighting solutions, to manufacture lighting units for in-ground and canopy lighting applications such as Decking Areas, Water Features and Walkways. Company Chairman, Dean says that this product is, "Excellent for LED potting for outdoor use. It's easy to use, doesn't gas up, cures quickly and doesn't mark easily."  Contact technical@techsil.co.uk for more information on VT3000.

Structural adhesives are used to fix LEDs in place. Our customers have found these products that we supply from ITW Devcon  to work well in different environmental conditions:
  • Devweld 531Devweld 530 - Toughened structural adhesive produces superior strength loading-bearing bonds to engineered plastics, unprepared metals, ceramics, wood and dissimilar substrates. Minimal surface preparation, resistant to weathering, humidity and wide variations in temperature.
  • Devweld 531 - Formulated for difficult-to-bond engineered plastics such as nylon based alloys, epoxy composites and modified polyesters. Superior bond strength, durability and impact strength. Excellent environmental and chemical resistance.

iVision (http://www.ivisionuk.com) are a manufacturer and international distributor of quality lighting products. Luke Davies, Product Development Manager had this to say, "The RTV1084G silicon based adhesive that is provided by Techsil is used to attach LEDs to the board which are hand placed. The adhesive holds the LEDs securely in place which allows them to be soldered with ease. The silicone also acts as a conductor between the LEDs and the circuit board. The adhesive is mainly used in the production of the smaller fittings in our Lumos range such as MR16's and Lumos 3s.

We also use the G641 Heat Sink Compound from Techsil. Here at iVision we use this compound right across our range in the manufacture of our LED products, from smaller fittings such as our Lumos 3's and MR16's which contain just 3 LEDs, to larger light fittings such as our Lumos floodlight range which contain up to 48 LEDs. The heat sink compound is applied between the LED board and the heat sink material for the purpose of dissipating any excess heat generated by the diodes away from the LED board, towards the heat sink. This ensures that the LEDs do not overheat thus prolonging life and maintaining efficiency."
