Power Adhesives | World’s First Certified Biodegradable Range

The regulations around packaging materials is tightening, specifically with the European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) driving a shift towards compostable & recyclable solutions. Manufacturers face the challenge of adhering to these mandates while maintaining line speeds and bond integrity.Power Adhesives has responded to this industrial requirement by expanding their biodegradable hot melt portfolio with three new technical grades.

These additions, Tecbond 902B-PL, 351B-PR, and 355B-PR, join the existing range to provide specialised options for pressure-sensitive applications, high-speed packaging, and cold storage environments.

Tecbond 902B-PL: Bio-Based Pressure Sensitive Formulation

Adhesives with high initial tack are often required for difficult substrates where compression time is limited. Tecbond 902B-PL addresses this need as a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) retaining a permanent tack. This grade is distinct within the range due to its composition, which includes 51% bio-based content.

The technical specification identifies this grade as a bulk pillow adhesive suitable for bead or spray application. Its high-tack nature allows it to bond effectively to challenging materials, including plastics, wood, and heavy board. It is also appropriate for labelling applications and upholstery. The viscosity is rated at 2500 cPs, requiring an application temperature between 140°C and 180°C.

Tecbond 351B-PR: Low Viscosity for Operational Efficiency

Maintenance downtime caused by nozzle blockages and charring is a frequent issue in high-volume packaging lines.Tecbond 351B-PR is formulated to mitigate these processing risks. This grade is characterised by its low viscosity of 500 cPs, which facilitates clean running through dispensing systems and reduces the frequency of filter changes.

It is an odourless formulation designed for general packaging, tray assembly, and carton sealing. The adhesive offers an open time of approximately 10 seconds and operates within the standard 140°C to 180°C temperature window. This specification supports manufacturers prioritising continuous throughput and equipment longevity.

Tecbond 355B-PR: Specialist Grade for Coated Boards and Deep Freeze

Standard hot melts often struggle to adhere to coated or laminated surfaces, particularly when exposed to low temperatures. Tecbond 355B-PR is engineered to overcome these adhesion barriers. It is a low viscosity grade (1000 cPs) specifically developed for coated packaging materials and is suitable for freezer applications.

This grade maintains a 10-second open time, aligning with the cycle times of standard packaging machinery.  By providing a secure bond on glossy or treated surfaces that must withstand cold storage, it closes a significant capability gap in the biodegradable adhesive market

Certification and End-of-Life Profile

Validating environmental claims is essential for compliance. The Tecbond biodegradable range holds certification under EN 13432 and ASTM D6400, standards which verify the material fully biodegrades under industrial composting conditions. The degradation process leaves behind no harmful products and no microplastics.Crucially for the paper and board industry, the range has achieved CHIRA certification. This assessment confirms that the adhesives are non-impactful in fibre-based recycling processes, ensuring they do not disrupt pulping streams. The breakdown of these adhesives relies on naturally occurring environmental conditions, initiated by oxygen, UV light, and heat.
