What is 3M™ VHB™ Tape? The Structural Adhesive Tape Solution

The term VHB™ is an abbreviation for Very High Bond. It is the trademarked name for 3M’s family of high-performance, double-sided acrylic foam tapes that are engineered to create permanent, structural bonds strong enough to replace mechanical fasteners (like screws, rivets, or welds) and liquid structural adhesives in many applications.

Since its introduction in the 1980s, VHB™ tape has been recognised as a revolutionary bonding solution that offers strength, speed, and aesthetic benefits.

The Technical Difference: VHB™ vs. Conventional Foam Tapes

VHB™ tapes are technically a subset of acrylic foam tapes, but their unique all-acrylic construction and processing grant them superior performance over standard Polyethylene (PE) foam tapes and generic acrylic foam tapes.

The key difference lies in the concept of Viscoelasticity:

Feature 3M™ VHB™ Acrylic Foam Tape Conventional PE Foam Tape
Composition 100% Closed-Cell Acrylic Adhesive Foam Polyethylene (PE) Foam with Rubber/Acrylic Adhesive
Structure Viscoelastic: Behaves like a liquid (flows to 'wet out' a surface) and a solid (holds load). Elastic (springy) with lower internal strength.
Stress Management Distributes stress over the entire bond line, absorbing dynamic loads, vibration, and thermal expansion/contraction. Concentrates stress at the edges; limited ability to absorb long-term dynamic movement.
Environmental Superior: Excellent, permanent resistance to UV, moisture, solvents, and extreme temperature cycling (-40C to +90C long-term). Good, but often limited by UV resistance and high-temperature performance of the adhesive/foam.
Bond Type Structural/Permanent: Eliminates the need for drilling and welding. Sealing/Mounting: Used for light-duty attachment and gap-filling.

What is 3M™ VHB™ Tape Used For?

VHB™ tape is used to join a wide variety of materials, including metals, glass, plastics (including Low Surface Energy or LSE substrates like Polypropylene with specific VHB series), and painted or powder-coated surfaces.

Its primary purpose is to deliver a clean, reliable, and permanent bond that offers both high shear strength and sealing properties simultaneously.

Key benefits of using VHB™ tape include:

  • Invisible Fastening: Provides a virtually seamless look by eliminating screws, rivets, and spot welds.

  • Sealing: The closed-cell foam prevents water, dust, and moisture ingress.

  • Vibration and Noise Dampening: The viscoelastic core absorbs impact and reduces rattling, contributing to product durability.

  • Corrosion Prevention: Separates dissimilar metals, preventing galvanic corrosion.

Technical Applications by Industry

VHB™ tapes are an established, high-specification solution found in demanding industries where durability and aesthetic appeal are critical.
