TECHSiL APPROVALS AND CERTIFICATIONS

At TECHSiL we understand the critical nature of adhesive applications across aerospace, defence, transportation, medical and more. Our adhesives have been rigorously tested and approved to meet the stringent requirements various certifications and specifications from biocompatibility to MIL-Spec to biodegradability.

Below we have outlined all the specifications, approvals, and certifications that TECHSiL provide as well as a range of tested products for each one, which TECHSiL supply.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

JOSCAR REGISTERED

TECHSiL are part of the Join Supply Chain Accreditation Register (JOSCAR), which enables businesses in the Aerospace and Defence sector to identify qualified suppliers.

This accreditation indicates that TECHSiL Ltd has met the JOSCAR standards pertaining to company capability, accreditations, information security, corporate social responsibility, financial history and ethical operations. The highly valued accreditation mark is recognised by some of the largest purchasers in the defence community such as BAE Systems, Leonardo, NATS, QinetiQ, Lockheed Martin and others.

AEROSPACE AND DEFENCE

Mil-Spec - These are US military specifications proving a product can handle demanding defence and aerospace conditions. MIL-A-46146 covers silicone adhesive sealants safe for use on sensitive metals and electronics. MIL-S-8802 (now AMS-S-8802) covers sealants used in aircraft fuel tanks, tested to handle extreme temperatures. 

ASTM E595 (Low outgassing) - The standard test to check how little vapour or residue a material releases when placed in a vacuum. This is especially important in space applications.

MOD approval shows that a product meets UK Ministry of Defence standards specific to defence procurement. You can find MOD approved Loctite products on our sister site GlueOnline

Boeing Specification BAC5010 - Boeing's own specification for how adhesives must be applied, confirming a product is approved for use in Boeing aircraft manufacturing and maintenance.

Airbus Qualification Level P3 - Shows a sealant has passed Airbus's own qualification testing and is approved for use on Airbus aircraft, at the specific performance level (P3).

FDA AND FOOD CONTACT

FDA approval confirms an adhesive or sealant is safe to use where it may indirectly contact food, such as in packaging or food processing equipment. It's based on FDA rules, CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) 175.105, that set out which ingredients are approved for this use. Some products meet an even stricter standard (21 CFR 175.300) for situations involving more prolonged food contact.

BIOCOMPATIBILITY

Biocompatibility is demonstrated by two main tests used to show a material is safe for contact with the human body: USP Class VI and ISO 10993-5. USP Class VI is a US standard that checks a material doesn't cause harmful reactions when it encounters tissue. ISO 10993 is the international equivalent and covers areas like skin irritation and toxicity.

REACH AND ROHS

REACH and RoHS are EU rules limiting harmful chemicals in products. REACH requires manufacturers to track and disclosure substances of high concerns. RoHS bans specific hazardous substances in electrical and electronic products. The bulk of REACH and RoHS compliant products TECHSiL supply are polyurethane elastomers and foams for entertainment, automotive and prototyping applications via our sister site BJB Materials Europe.

UL CLASSIFICATION - UNDERWRITERS LABORATORIES

UL (Underwriters Laboratories) is a well-known independent safety testing organisation. ‘UL Approved’ is not a formal approval and can relate to many different tests, however for adhesives and sealants it usually refers to having UL-94 and UL 746 T1 approvals for flammability and electrical application suitability.

UL-94 is for flammability testing and is used frequently for appliance and electrical equipment. It rates materials based on how well it stops burning once a flame is removed. V-0 is the highest rating, meaning vertically self-extinguishing, and HB being the lowest (Horizontal burn)  

UL 746 is for materials used in electrical applications involving temperature and exposure to thermal stress.

GAS AND WATER

The Gas Industry Approvals confirm suitability for both combustible gas for fuel and gases for respiration in medical treatment. Approval organisations include BAM, DVGW and KIWA.

The Water Industry Approvals confirm suitability of the adhesive products for sealing and contact with potable drinking water and for sealing and contact with sewage and wastewater. Approval organisations include NSF, WRAS, and WRC.

SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability related approvals cover recyclability, biodegradability, and the us of harmful chemicals. These are especially important in the packaging industry and for PPWR.

PFAS free means a product contains no per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances which are long lasting, manmade chemicals being increasingly restricted by regulators due to environmental and health concerns.

ASTM D6400 - The standard used to confirm a plastic material will fully break down in an industrial composting facility, without leaving anything toxic behind.

EN13432 - European equivalent of ASTM D6400, it confirms packaging or material will break down safely and completely in an industrial composting facility.

ASTM D6954 - This standard tests plastics that are designed to break down through a mix of exposure to oxygen/sunlight and natural biological action.

ASTM D6866 - This test tells you how much of a material's carbon comes from plants or other renewable sources, it's how biobased content claims like "30% plant-based" are verified.

FLAMMABILITY, FIRE, AND SMOKE

EN 45545 is the European fire safety standard for materials used in rail applications. It sorts materials into three levels, HL1, HL2, and HL3, based on factors such as time spent in tunnels, whether the vehicle is automatic, double decked, or has sleeping accommodation, and sets requirements covering flame spread, smoke and toxicity.
