Adhesives and sealants are critical for spacecrafts and satellites whether for interior crew areas, rockets, launch structures and vehicles, solar arrays and panels, or ensuring electonic components and senors work at optimal performance. 

A critical challenge of spacecraft and satellite manufacturing is outgassing which threatens the performance and reliability of electronic components in space. CHALLENGES IN SPACE

Space related manufacturing faces a range of challenges requiring advanced adhesive solutions. Some challenges adhesives and sealants face in space include:

  • Thermal cycling and extreme temperatures
  • Dissimilar and hard to bond substrates i.e. composites

SPACE APPLICATIONS

Solar arrays, ROSAs, and solar panels generate power from the sun to power satellites and scientific discovery. They face extreme temperature swings, dissimilar materials, UV exposure, and micrometeroid impacts. Adhesives, sealants, and tapes can be used to protect components from these challenges, help with thermal management and cooling, bond PV cells to frames, seal panel edges and more. 

GROUND SUPPORT & LAUNCH STRUCTURES

Lanuch vehicles and structures are exposed to extreme temperatures as well as differential thermal expansion during launch and landing, requiring heat resistant bonds and protective coatings. Suitable coatings and sealants also help to reduce downtime for recoating, repairs, and refurbishments. 

Engines face extreme temperatures, chemical exposure, and must be reliable long term. Adhesives and sealants are used throughout engine systems from bonding the primary metal components to thread sealing and noise dampening. The choice of material can be the difference between mission success and safety or a costly failure. Suitable products include RTV silicones, potting compounds and threadlockers. 

Thermal management is critical in small satellites with miniaturisation, high power outputs, and extreme environments causing increased heat generation. Thermal interface materials help to distribute and manage heat to prevent PCB and electronic damage. Other areas of electronic protection TECHSiL offers includes potting and encapsulation, vibration protection, electrically conductive coatings, and gap fillers. 

Adheisves presure material integrity by not requiring drilling or holes while also reducing the weight caused by traditional fixtures like nuts, bolts, and screws. Structural adhesives also distribute loads across the bonded surface rather then concentrating stress, increasing structural strength, corrosion protection and greater design flexibility. Speciality adhesives also allow for the bonding of dissimilar materials and composites to create lightweight structures. 

Bonding interior components like panels, doors, and floors in cabin and cargo components must be structurally strong, lightweight and safe. All adhesives used for spacecraft interiors must be low outgassing due to the enclosed environment as well as meet fire safety and RoHS/REACH compliance standards. Crewed spacecrafts must also be reliably sealed to ensure a safe breathable atmosphere including pressure seals and thermal seals.
